Sponsored by the Mesa County Department of Human Services and Hilltop Community Resources, Inc.
The Mesa County S.O.S., a Faith in action program, serves our community by providing supportive services, referrals, education and training that promote health, independence and dignity as well as improve the quality of life. These services are provided through a dedicated and compassionate network of trained volunteers. S.O.S helps people who need assistance to stay as independent as possible while living at home.
Service Credit (Banking Hours)
Volunteers provide services and in return earn service "credits" that the volunteer can use for the same types of services when they need them or give them to someone else who needs them.
Recipients
If a recipient of services needs assistance and cannot volunteer because of health reasons, credits may be available to utilize services through the generous gifts of the volunteers. This means the recipient, if unable to do so, does not have to volunteer to receive services, however, the recipient of services is to have a friend or family member volunteer on their behalf. Services are provided free of charge by the volunteer and are not intended to replace the provision of any professional services including, including but not limited to, medical or health services or advice.
Volunteers
Volunteers must attend orientation and have a personal interview with the S.O.S Coordinator. Character references and criminal background checks are reviewed. If providing transportation, the volunteers' driving records are reviewed and volunteers must show proof of automobile liability insurance. Volunteers present a S.O.S identification badge to the recipient of services at the time of service.
Types of services
Services offered are transportation, friendly visiting, phone calls, minor household management, minor home repair, light housekeeping, meal preparation, respite, mending, shopping, and light yard work. Some services are short term and others are on going.
Receiving services
The recipient of services is required to give a minimum of three business days advance notice to S.O.S before requesting services. A volunteer is contacted by S.O.S with the assignment. After accepting the assignment, the volunteer will call the recipient of services within 24 hours and again 24 hours before the service occurs, to confirm the date and time of the service. S.O.S does not give out the volunteer's phone number. All appointments should be arranged through the S.O.S staff. While S.O.S assists recipients and volunteers in arranging services, it does not control the method or timing of the provision of services by volunteers.
